Chairmans Report - Winter 2007

A welcome to the curious, the casual enquirer and the committed, to the update on progress regarding Southminster in Future Times. In addition it may be helpful to include a few words of introduction as I have only recently become formally involved in the group.

Most importantly, we are well on track to launch a Parish Plan in April 2008, based upon what residents in Southminster have been saying they want to see in the village in the future. Consultation has been comprehensive and methods have been varied, taking advantage of a number of natural opportunities, culminating in the distribution of a questionnaire to every household. In addition, specific soundings have been taken with young people and local businesses. None of this would have happened without the commitment and enthusiasm of a small group of individuals who have steered the activity along. The partnership with the Parish Council and Rural Community Council of Essex during the journey has been invaluable.

Meaningful engagement continues to be an ongoing problem. What more can be done to enable everyone in the village to have their say in what are potentially important issues? How can we guard against the apathy, loss of direction and the danger of producing a plan that is not relevant and will not make a real difference? No one has the answers, but all are open to learn from one another.

I have lived in the village for only five years (yes a relative newcomer) and am by no means knowledgeable about local issues. That for me is a real advantage as it means that I must look to others who have this knowledge and who can bring their expertise to the exercise. I am in that period of life when I have raised children, and therefore have an awareness of the needs of the young, have elderly friends and relatives, and am conscious of their needs, have worked at Essex County Council in planning and managing Social Care Services with a multi million pound budget, and have a consultancy business that keeps me in touch with the business world. I am passionate about a proper balance between consultation and action, and also about ensuring that there are opportunities to include everyone.

Democratic processes give us all the opportunity to have our say in shaping the village in the future. You can play your part in seizing the opportunity to ensure that your voice is heard, and perhaps after that to ensure that the vision is implemented. It would be good to hear from you.
